Apple: Neue Support-Seite bezüglich gebogener iPads

Wir erinnern uns: Ende 2018 gab es vermehrt Meldungen über gebogene iPads. Betroffen sind und waren die aktuellen Pro-Modelle. Apple gab an, dass dies „normal“ sei und bekam dafür Kritik. Kurz danach bestätigte man aber, dass man sich noch mal richtig dazu äußern möchte und hat dies nun getan.

Es gibt eine neue Support-Seite, die sich dem „iPad Pro unibody enclosure design“ widmet und am 5. Januar veröffentlicht wurde. Apple nennt bewusst kein „bending“ in der Headline und geht auf den Fertigungsprozess sein:

For the first time ever on an iPad, these bands are manufactured using a process called co-molding. In this high-temperature process, plastic is injected into precisely milled channels in the aluminum enclosure where it bonds to micro-pores in the aluminum surface. After the plastic cools, the entire enclosure is finished with a precision CNC machining operation, yielding a seamless integration of plastic and aluminum into a single, strong enclosure.

Doch entscheidend sind diese Zeilen:

This flatness specification allows for no more than 400 microns of deviation across the length of any side — less than the thickness of four sheets of paper. The new straight edges and the presence of the antenna splits may make subtle deviations in flatness more visible only from certain viewing angles that are imperceptible during normal use.

Es kann also eine Abweichung geben und Apple geht geschickt wie immer vor, statt Millimeter nutzt man die Einheit Mikrometer. Das klingt weniger. Doch 0,4 mm Abweichung klingen dann doch schon recht viel finde ich. Aber:

These small variances do not affect the strength of the enclosure or the function of the product and will not change over time through normal use.

Apple war also bewusst, dass sowas vorkommen kann, doch da es nicht die Funktionalität beeinflusst, geht das klar. Doch falls man nicht damit zufrieden ist, so soll man den Support von Apple kontaktieren heißt es. Man erwähnt auch, dass man Produkte bei Apple innerhalb der ersten 14 Tage umtauschen kann.

Damit dürfte dieses Thema nun (für Apple) abgehakt sein. Ich habe in den Tagen nach der ersten Meldung ehrlich gesagt nicht so viele Meldungen gesehen, würde also nicht direkt von einem Gate sprechen. Aber es ist auch nicht der Standard, den man von Apple gewohnt ist.

Ich kann mir auch nicht vorstellen, dass für Apple selbst eine Abweichung von 0,4 mm absolut in Ordnung ist. Man dürfte, wie damals beim iPhone 6 und 6s, nun sicher an einer Lösung für das kommende iPad Pro arbeiten.
